Lydia
Lydia is 37 years old and she has five children, two with special needs. Her husband was physically and emotionally abusive, never allowing her to have a checkbook, credit card, automobile, or even a telephone. Lydia felt trapped within their violent relationship and the marriage lasted for 20 years. Finally, the abuse grew so severe that Lydia suffered a skull fracture. Realizing she had to escape with her children and reclaim their lives, she turned to Center for Women in Transition.
Today, Lydia is faced with finding a job, becoming self-sufficient, and providing for her children’s basic needs and emotional well-being—all while struggling to overcome so many years of trauma. Fortunately, she has serious help. The Vehicle Assistance Program at the Center provided Lydia with a good, used car and she is taking lessons to learn how to safely drive it. She works on parenting and personal goals with her Advocate and she has filed legal charges against her abuser. In the short time Lydia has been with the Center, she has already secured a daycare license and is learning to manage family and business budgets. Lydia and her children share deep emotional wounds, but together, they are beginning to heal.
In a letter to her Advocate, Lydia wrote, “You have empowered me with the resources and support that I have needed to keep me strong, even in my worse days. I now have the support and courage to start each and every day and know that life ahead is positive and full of new, safe and accomplished journeys. Thank you again for all you do and have done for me and my children.”

Lydia tiene 37 años y tiene cinco hijos, dos con necesidades especiales. Su marido era abusivo física y emocionalmente, nunca le permitia tener una chequera, tarjeta de crédito, automóviles, o incluso un teléfono. Lydia se sentía atrapada dentro de la relación violenta, el matrimonio duró 20 años. Al final, el abuso creció tan grave que Lydia sufrió una fractura de cráneo. Consciente de que tenía que escapar con sus hijos y rehacer su vida, ella se dirigió al Centro para Mujeres en Transición.
Hoy, Lydia se enfrenta a encontrar un trabajo, convertirse en autosuficiente, y esta proveyendo a sus hijos las necesidades básicas al igual que bienestar emocional- todo mientras que todos luchan para superar tantos años de traumas. Afortunadamente, ella tiene mucha ayuda. El Programa de Asistencia de vehículos en el Centro proveyó a Lydia con un buen auto usado y ella está tomando clases para aprender a conducir con seguridad. Ella trabaja con su trabajadora en mejorar sus técnicas como madre al igual que en metas personales y ya a presentado cargos legales contra su agresor. En el corto tiempo que Lydia ha trabajado con el Centro, ya ha obtenido su licencia para una guardería y está aprendiendo a manejar los presupuestos familiares y de su negocio. Lydia y sus hijos comparten profundas heridas emocionales, pero juntos, están empezando a sanar.
En una carta a su trabajadora, Lydia escribió: "Ustedes me han hecho mas fuerte con los recursos y el apoyo que he necesitado para mantenerme firme, incluso en mis peores días. Ahora tengo el apoyo y la valentía de empezar cada día sabiendo que la vida que esta delante de mi es positiva y llena de caminos nuevos y realizados. Gracias de nuevo por todo lo que hacen y lo que han hecho por mí y por mis hijos.
