Emily
Emily had a happy childhood, growing up with her family in Ottawa County. Her dad went to work every day and her mom stayed home, raising the children and volunteering at church and school. Emily was only 10 years old when she met Bill. Their parents were already acquainted, and she just knew that he was the boy of her dreams. After high school, Bill and Emily wanted to marry rather than go to college, and their families agreed. Bill worked hard in his father’s business and Emily worked at church. When their first baby was born, Emily stayed home to care for him. Before long, they were welcoming a second child into the family. Bill and Emily had gradually stopped attending church, and they no longer socialized with friends. Contact with their parents was infrequent and the distance between the families widened. No one ever imagined that Emily was a victim of domestic abuse.
As Emily’s isolation grew, Bill became more and more violent, until finally, he broke her jaw. The damage was so severe that surgery was needed to repair it, and Emily was admitted to the hospital. While she was there, a social worker encouraged her to call the crisis line at Center for Women in Transition. It took some time, but Emily eventually made that call. Advocates at the Center immediately responded by helping her design a safety plan that would enable her to take her children and escape.
Emily stayed in the safe shelter with her children, at first. Later, they moved into transitional housing, where they lived for nearly two years. During that time, Emily took advantage of the educational, vocational and therapeutic services and support offered by Center for Women in Transition. Today, Emily has reunited with her family and church community. She has a job, and her oldest child started college in the fall.

Emily tuvo una infancia feliz creciendo con su familia en el Condado de Ottawa. Su padre iba a trabajar a diario y su mamá se quedaba en casa, al cuidando de los niños y siendo voluntaria en la iglesia y la escuela. Emily tenía tan sólo 10 años cuando conoció a Bill. Sus padres ya se conocían, y ella sólo sabía que él era el chico de sus sueños. Después de la escuela secundaria, Bill y Emily querían casarse en vez de ir a la universidad, y sus familias estuvieron de acuerdo. Bill trabajaba duro en los negocios de su padre y Emily trabajaba en la iglesia. Cuando su primer bebé nació, Emily se quedó en casa para cuidar de él. En poco tiempo, estaban dando la bienvenida a un segundo niño a la familia. Bill y Emily habían dejado de asistir a la iglesia poco a poco, y ya no socializaban con los amigos. El contacto con sus padres era poco frecuente y la distancia entre las familias creció. Nadie imaginó que Emily era una víctima de abuso doméstico.
Conforme el aislamiento de Emily creció, Bill se hizo más y más violento, hasta que finalmente le rompió la mandíbula. El daño fue tan grave que fue necesaria una cirugía para repararla, y Emily fue admitida al hospital. Mientras estaba allí, una trabajadora social alentó a que llamara a la línea de crisis al Centro para Mujeres en Transición. Tomó algún tiempo, pero finalmente Emily hizo esa llamada. Trabajadores en el Centro respondieron inmediatamente y ayudaron a crear un plan de seguridad que le permitiría tomar a sus hijos y huir.
Al principio Emily se quedó en el refugio seguro con sus hijos. Más tarde, se trasladaron al programa de vivienda transicional, donde vivió durante casi dos años. Durante ese tiempo, Emily aprovecho los servicios educativos, vocacionales y terapéuticos junto con el apoyo ofrecidos por el Centro para Mujeres en Transición. Hoy en día, Emily se ha reunido con su familia y comunidad eclesiástica. Ella tiene trabajo, y su hijo mayor comenzó la universidad en el otoño.
