Mary Karr is an award-winning poet and best-selling memoirist. She is the author of Lit, the long-awaited sequel to her critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling memoirs The Liars' Club and Cherry.
A renowned public speaker, Karr has spoken at Harvard University, Oxford University, the New Yorker Literary Festival, PEN/Faulkner, and the Festival of Faith and Writing at Calvin College. She is acclaimed for bringing to her talks the same wit, irreverence, joy, and sorrow found in her writing. As a survivor of sexual assault, Karr found healing in poetry and prose. While her path to recovery was her own, her success is an inspiration to anyone working to end domestic and sexual violence.
“We’re very excited that Mary has accepted our invitation to Reach for the Stars,” says Charisse Mitchell, Executive Director of the Center for Women in Transition, “As a poet, an author, and also a survivor of sexual assault, Mary will bring a unique perspective to this event. We are all looking forward to hearing about her path to healing, and benefitting from some of her legendary wit and insight.”
Seeking to end domestic and sexual violence, the Center provides both supportive and crisis services to more than 3,000 women, men and children in Ottawa and Allegan counties each year.
